Light Transmission Categories
The light transmission of lenses is divided into 5 categories, from 0 to 4. Visible Light Transmission (VLT) is expressed as VLT + %. For example, VLT 21% means the lenses allow 21% of light through and absorb 79%.
- Category 0: 0-20% absorption or 80-100% light transmission. Allows a lot or all light through.
- Category 1: 20-57% absorption or 43-80% light transmission. Suitable for cloudy weather and twilight.
- Category 2: 57-82% absorption or 18-43% light transmission. Filters more light than Category 1. Suitable for bright days.
- Category 3: 82-92% absorption or 8-18% light transmission. Commonly used in various sports and activities in bright sunlight.
- Category 4: 92-97% absorption or 3-8% light transmission. Known as glacier or high-altitude glasses. Disadvantages: very dark, reduces depth perception to some extent.
